Peter Leuver

Peter Leuver was one of Australian fly fishing’s most influential fly tyers, artists, and instructional writers. A deeply creative and gentle soul, his contribution to fly tying in Australia spanned decades, shaping how generations of fly fishers approached the vice. Born into an artistic family in the Netherlands before migrating to Australia, Peter possessed a rare combination of fine artistic talent and practical fly-tying mastery. His distinctive watercolour illustrations, technical diagrams, and witty cartoons were a mainstay of early FlyLife magazine, bringing a unique aesthetic warmth and clarity to step-by-step tying tutorials. Across dozens of beautifully illustrated articles for FlyLife and other fly fishing publications, Peter demystified intricate fly patterns—ranging from classical variants like the Red Tag to localized emergers and terrestrial designs—making them accessible to beginners and seasoned tyers alike. Beyond his long-standing editorial contributions, Peter authored two foundational Australian angling titles: The Fisher’s Logbook and his seminal work, Fur & Feather: Fly-Tying for Trout (1991). Fur & Feather remains widely regarded as one of the definitive Australian fly-tying texts, celebrated for its practical instructions, elegant hand-drawn artwork, and deep understanding of local trout waters. A prominent figure within the New South Wales Rod Fishers’ Society—where he served as a council member, writer, and editor—Peter was legendary for his patience as a mentor. He hosted countless tying classes and personally taught many anglers across the country how to tie their very first fly. Peter passed away in February 2019. His legacy endures at fly-tying benches around Australia, in the pages of early FlyLife archives, and through the thousands of fly fishers who learned their craft from his books and articles.
