Victoria arguably has the most public access to water suited to fly fishing in mainland Australia. In trout fishing, overseas visitors to the region are often surprised by the diversity and beauty of these fisheries. Mountain high plain creeks and crystal clear streams that flow from their flanks, to the larger tailrace rivers such as the Goulburn and lower Mitta Mitta provide an abundance of stream options. The most celebrated trout streams are in the North East, extending to the foothills of the Snowy Mountains and bordering on New South Wales.
Lakes and impoundments are the mainstays of the Central and Western districts, there's a vast range stillwater fisheries in Victoria, supported by a vigilant stocking program to sustain populations of trout as well as native species such as golden perch, estuary perch and even Murray cod.
The estuaries of Victoria offer plenty of salt options on the fly with holiday hamlets dotted all along the coastline such as Mallacoota, Inverloch and Apollo Bay, where estuary species such as bream and flathead can be targeted on fly.
Victoria's climate is very diverse with often scorching temperatures in the height of summer, to snowfalls in the winter. The variety of fisheries and species ensures that there are many options to target all year round, regardless of the season.
