Dougal Rillstone

Dougal Rillstone was born in Gore, close to the Mataura River, more years ago than he cares to remember. He was four when he caught his first trout in the Mataura, and has been mesmerised by trout ever since. In 1998 he won the individual title at the Oceania Fly Fishing Championships, held in the Snowy Mountains.
In recent years he has split his fly fishing time between the rivers of southern New Zealand, and pursuing permit in the Florida Keys, Cuba, the Bahamas, Belize, Mexico and Australia.
Dougal has been a contributor to FlyLife since his first story in issue 60. In 2020 he published his book, Upstream on The Mataura, in which he captured the essence of his lifelong connection with the Mataura River.
