Beginning this journey we call fly fishing is often daunting, and it all starts with that first outfit. Scientific Anglers have taken the guesswork out of the equation with these pre-packed and pre-rigged kits which represent great value.

The Ampere Outfit includes a quality moderate-fast action fly rod, a cast aluminium disc drag reel pre-rigged with backing and a USA made weight-forward fly-line specifically designed for high performance. Rod tube and reel bag are also included, all housed in an attractive box complete with basic assembly and rigging instructions.

Whether you become a die-hard fly-fisher or just have one or two outfits tucked away with all your conventional gear, the Ampere offers a capable rig that will provide years of reliable service without straining the finances.

I was pleasantly surprised with the #6 Ampere Outfit, which casts exceptionally well with ease and forgiveness. This model features a western grip with small fighting butt – a favourite configuration as 6-weights are about as close as you can get to an all-round crossover rod for trout and light saltwater.

A few larger than average carp were convinced to dry land on my local waters, in less than favourable conditions — testament to the tuning of this outfit and the ability to cast a variety of different types of fly. Carp require precise and delicate presentations like so many other species, and possess a decent propeller. The Scientific Anglers Ampere Outfit was up to the task on all counts.

These kits are available in 9-ft #5 to #10 weights at a fly tackle retailer near you. Outfit supplied by Scientific Anglers.
