JCF Ocean & Bay saltwater rods
Peter Smith tackles Christmas Island bonefish with a JCF rod.

JCF Ocean & Bay Saltwater rod

On my first venture to Christmas Island I took a JCF Ocean & Bay 8-weight rod. Christmas Island was everything that I had read about with stiff breezes, endless flats and an abundance of feisty bonefish.

The 8-weight was the perfect rod, especially on the more windy days, with winds gusting to 20 knots. We averaged 15–20 bones per day and the Ocean & Bay Series 8-weight handled the hardest-running fish with ease. Even our guide, Teanaki, (a man not given to extravagant praise!) had a cast and gave it the seal of approval.

The rod is designed for the salt and built from high modulus carbon—30T to 46T. It has a good fast action. The Pacific Bay components, including the black anodised reel seat, are salt-water resistant. It has 2 chrome-plated stripping guides and snakes and AAA, Full Wells, Portuguese cork handle with a fighting butt.

It comes with a spare tip in a Cordura rod tube with name-tag, carry-strap and a no-nonsense warranty.

For anyone looking for a versatile, saltwater, 9' 8-weight, four-piece rod at a very reasonable price check out this rod at John Coles Fly Fishing.
