Anyone have any experience with carpal tunnel syndrome and treatments / return to fishing?

Thanks,

Matt

I know enough to know it's a pain and recovery after surgery can take time.
I imagine rod grip/shape would be critical.

I started developing this problem. Caught it early, went and had some very intense remedial sports massages and it sorted the problem for me.

Chris,

Could I trouble you to describe your symptoms? Both arms / hands?

Thank you

I was getting numb in my right hand, with a loss of grip strength. The doc said I was developing carpal tunnel and needed an operation.

At the time I was seeing a pretty good sports physio and she thought my forearms were over developed putting pressure on the nerves (I was rewinding electric motors for a living, going to the gym 5 days a week plus tying flies).

So, she pretty much pushed her elbow along my forearms with her body weight, to seperate the muscles. Absolutely killed... but a few days later the symptoms were gone. I had a couple of follow up sessions particularly on the right arm, and it hasn't been a problem since. Still get a massage every couple of months but as I'm not working on the tools any more it hasn't come back.

Kind Regards

Thank you for taking the time, Chris.

Hopefully I can sort it without surgery.

Yes I've had the same. Loss of strength in both hands and pins and needles.
I do manual work, which has contributed mostly.
I used strapping (kinesiology tape) and bandages at night for 2 weeks. I also see a remedial massage therapist evey 6 weeks (for the past 3 years) which does exactly what chris was saying. Deep tissue massage. He worked on my forearms when i told him the issue, but also said some similar symptoms arise from neck and shoulder tightness.
Can't say what had helped most but it has cleared up to a tolerable level.

I think surgery should be the last resort

Thanks Brendan.

I'll look into some intensive therapy.

The feeling is quite frightening. More so the worry of the impact on fishing.
