The Turville Shield, named after Jack Turville, original owner of J M Turville Fishing Tackle store in Melbourne, was the last event on the 2017 Australian casting calendar. It was a great event with double the competitors entered in 2016 and congratulations to Ballarat Fly Fishers on winning the day. The 2017 Brunn Shield was also won by Ballarat Fly Fishers which can claim the title of premier tournament fly casting club in Australia in 2017. Super effort by the Ballarat Fly Fishers and congratulations to Gary McKay who won the Alec Wallace trophy for the highest score at the Turville Shield. Calder Fly Fishers were represented in their first fly accuracy teams event and am sure they will challenge for top club honours in the near future.

John Waters won the All Accuracy, All Distance and the Champion of Champions in the 2017 Australian Fly Casting Championships. Tom Galloway from Southern Fly Fishers won the Victorian Fly Casting Champion of Champions. It was Tom's first overall win and a great result. Tracy Phelan won the All Distance Victorian Championships and Tom won the All Accuracy Victorian Championships.

Special thank you to Southern Fly Fishers which hosted both Championships. Southern is a great supporter of tournament casting in Australia and it is always a pleasure to visit the best casting pool in Australia and avail myself of a snag from their BBQ.

Now is the time to plan for 2018 and the ACF Executive have a conference on Sunday to do just that. 20128 will see the introduction of a handicap system, intra-club tuition days, public casting clinics, selection trials for 2018 world championships and initiatives for Project Healing Waters, Casting For Kids and Casting for Recovery.

Stay tuned for what will be the best year for casting ever.

Got a bit ahead of myself, should focus on 2018, not 20128.

The ACF also successfully conducted the first 2017 Southern Cross Fly Casting Challenge using international rules in June. This comprises fly fishing gear events e.g. 5 weight accuracy, 5 weight distance, a light line shooting head distance (line weight 27 grams) and a light line two handed event (line weight 55 grams).
This gear is exactly the same as is used on streams and estuaries throughout Australia and the techniques being developed on the tournament field are fully transferable to that stream or estuary. e.g long carries, sight casting, tempo and hauling etc etc etc.
Some public Casting Clinics in 2018 will see those techniques on display and for those who attend, will take away valuable instruction for use in the fly fishing world.
The new casting rules (two concentric hoops for scoring vs the old single hoops which used an all-or-nothing scoring system) have been excellent and the benefits illustrated by the scores cast by casters at all levels, and the the number of casters within a point or two out of 200, at the top of the leader's board at the end of the day.
