flylifeModeratorJust checked and we’ve been talking about this on the FL forum since May 2018! It’s taken this long to take what should have been the first step in the process. Make that the second step cos it should have been properly dealt with at state govt level in the first place. A shameful waste of time and money for all concerned.

PT48ParticipantToo right. At least this time we get to argue what national park/wilderness values should be in a democratic and egalitarian society rather than fuming over a grubby piece of political cronyism.

jimmyellenbergerParticipantThe worry is just how deeply entrenched that grubby political cronyism seems to be down here. I did notice that in his brief comment the proponent revealed that seeing the project through was his role and that he would stick to it…. seemed an unusual choice of words. I would have thought ” intention” would be the go… unless it really is your role of course.
Watchful, cynical…Jimmy

BarryJParticipantFrom the FAWAHA Facebook page:
”The Commonwealth decision to actually do an assessment of the Lake Malbena proposal confirms that the Management of Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service are way off track. They have been politicised and they tried to avoid a Commonwealth assessment by splitting this project into 2 stages. That failed. But even more disturbing is that they were happy to lease an entire island for a development that had no approvals, it was nothing more than a few words on a piece of paper when Elise Archer MP signed over Halls Island for the price of a rubbish tip.
That’s just ridiculous. Parks Management should be held to account for this debacle and they should stop devoting their already stretched resources to fighting for heli tourism and private developments in our World Heritage Areas. Grab a ticket to the meeting tomorrow, donate to the Wilderness war chest (link below) and be assured, we can end this and Parks can end their marriage with the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania and get back on track. Malbena Matters!

BarryJParticipantCouldn’t make it to Miena for the meeting today? Here are a few key points to take away.
1. When the Commonwealth Government call for public submissions we need to get massive numbers. Sussan Ley MP should recognise that the impact on World Heritage is unacceptable and she can reject it.
2. The opposition to Malbena and privatising our wild places is getting stronger and bigger. Take a look at the ABC Hobart poll from yesterday, last count was in excess of 800 comments and 99% were dead against it. Have you actually met anyone who says this is a good idea?
3. Tourism operators and members of the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania can and should speak out and use their voice because sending choppers into our wild places has no public support and it’s the opposite of Tassies “brand”. Who does the TICT represent?
4. There are plenty of alternatives to developing the heart of our wild places. There are existing areas on public and private land that have road access that could provide excellent tourism opportunities.
5. The Wilderness Society and Tasmanian National Parks Association Supreme Court appeal will be held on October 2nd and you can donate to this here:
https://supporter.wilderness.org.au/donation-pages/tws-tas
5. We filled the Miena Hall and the locals at the Great Lake Community Centre can put on a great spread. THANK YOU!
Image: Greg French telling everyone to “Maintain the Rage” because that’s what will end this! Have you written to the Parks Minister Roger Jaensch MP to express your outrage? http://www.rogerjaensch.com.au/contact-roger/ Please do. Thanks.

BarryJParticipantGreat news on the Lake Malbena (development in Tassie’s National Parks in general).
Tourism Industry Council Tasmania boycott in the news today. The Australian reporting a boycott of the TICT by members who don’t want to be associated with developments such as Lake Malbena. “A split in Tasmania’s $3bn tourism industry over development in national parks is fuelling a boycott by tourist operators of mandatory accreditation, amid plans for a rival industry body.” https://t.co/9BHR0JPWVX?amp=1

PT48ParticipantIs Luke Martin a member of that organisation? He has been a vocal proponent of the Lake Malbena development.
November 16, 2020 at 9:15 am #877753
BarryJParticipantLuke Martin is the CEO (and therefore chief mouthpiece) of TICT. I should probably add that Daniel Hackett is now a director of TICT!

JohnrsParticipantFolks
Look at Ian Johnson’s/Maria Island Walks ??$6million of public funds toward private hut construction on the south coast track.
Tassie is a comfortable little mates state, nice enough but eventually this becomes cronyism then frank corruption………..
Not that I am accusing anyone of corrupt behaviour, at least not yet.

BarryJParticipantGood news (copied from Facebook):
“Minister Sussan Ley MP has today released a “statement of reasons” for her decision to re-assess the Malbena farce. The Minister has completely contradicted Tasmania’s Head of Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service Jason Jacobi, who in November 2019 told the ABC that “Daniel and Simone Hackett have shown that helicopter access into Halls Island can be managed appropriately”. Commonwealth Minister for the Environment states today; the impact from the use of helicopters on the World Heritage Area was ” likely to be significant” and the scale of loss of Wilderness values was “substantial” (full document in link below)… There is something very rotten about senior bureaucrats in Tas that are so willing to champion the destruction of our wild places for so few and with so little concern. This debacle needs to end.”
