JohnrsParticipantQuestioning the Lake Malbena approvals process?
Here is the ministerial response.
No problems apparently.
I guess this is why there was more than 1000 non supportive submissions to the Highlands Council hearing
and two supreme court cases.Really Minister?

FlossParticipantAny news on lake malbena appeal?

BarryJParticipantThe application was sent back to the Federal Minister for the Environment (Sussan Ley) to be reviewed as the original decision by the previous Minister was found to be flawed; factors which were ignored as not needing to be considered were ruled to be in need of consideration. Minister Ley is yet to announce her decision.

PT48ParticipantIt could prove difficult – a bit like owning up to who the bright spark was who let the Ruby Princess dock in Sydney and disgorge its passengers.

BarryJParticipantHere is a link to a petition to the Wild Drake shareholders:
https://www.change.org/p/nicholas-and-victoria-d-antione-we-re-all-shareholders-in-world-heritage
Part of the petition says:
”The investors in Wild Drake (aka Riverfly) are Nicholas D’Antoine, Victoria D’Antoine, John Topfer, Dorothy Topfer and Daniel Hackett. They are funding this push to introduce the incessant buzz of helicopters and destroy the wilderness experience for the rest of us. If they succeed, the serene experience of being in this place will be gone. The investors need to be reminded of why these wild places matter to us and why their plans are so at odds with the very reason we go to the lakes.
Nicholas D’Antoine, Victoria D’Antoine, John Topfer , Dorothy Topfer and Daniel Hackett, take a moment to reflect and ask do you really want to be known as the people who funded and fought to send the choppers into this wild place? Please stop funding this divisive, destructive and illegitimate proposal.
Keeping our wild places wild matters. Malbena Matters.”
Please follow the link above to sign the petition.

”BAD NEWS! The Supreme Court’s decision on the appeal by TWS and TNPA, against the Planning Tribunal decision regarding the Lake Malbena development proposal, was handed down this afternoon.
Neither of our grounds of appeal succeeded. Obviously, this is extremely disappointing. We will be considering our options after our legal representatives have reviewed the decision over the next few days.
Our appeal contended that the Resource Management and Planning Appeal Tribunal improperly delegated its assessment of the Lake Malbena proposal to Tasmania’s Parks and Wildlife Service and did not undertake its own assessment of the proposal against the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area Management Plan. The Court’s findings related to this legal point, not the merits of the proposal itself.

Today, an open letter (below) was sent by some members of the Fishers and Walkers Against Helicopter Access (FAWAHA) to Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife boss Jason Jacobi, his staff, his minister, the ministers staff and media demanding some answers. Attached here for your reading pleasure. We, (FAWAHA) believe Mr Jacobi needs to answer these questions and more, and PWS staff deserve to know that we support them despite the gag orders they have to work under.

BarryJParticipantPlease take a few minutes of your time to email Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley via the link below. The email can be sent “as is” but will have more effect if you customise it to suit yourself.

PT48ParticipantNow is an excellent time to write to Federal Environment Minister, Sussan Ley, because sitting on her desk is a review of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act conducted by Professor Graeme Samuel. Professor Samuel is highly critical of the efficacy of the Act. He sees that it is failing to do what it was designed to do. He believes that the environment is in a state of decline, the trajectory of which, is completely unsustainable. He also calls for a set of national standards that the states have to adhere to. If only such a set of standards were in place when the Tasmanian Government engaged in such dubious activities to advance the Lake Malbena project – a test case to see what it can get away with.
At the very least, ask Minister Ley to send the Lake Malbena project back to square one so that it can be subject to proper, transparent processes.

Response received from parks to the questions around public access etc. They will respond in “coming weeks”. To be fair it might take a while to find the lease for Halls Island that apparently existed before the one they created for Wild Drake Pty Ltd. We’ll wait. 🙄

PT48ParticipantBig report in The Mercury today about Jacobi’s secret dealings, the ensuing attempt at concealment and the resultant worker dissatisfaction within the DPIPWE.
July 25, 2020 at 12:16 pm #869483
BarryJParticipantThis is a quote from the article:
”Greens leader Cassy O’Connor said Mr Baker was “begging disaffected staff to show loyalty”.
“There are plenty of dedicated state servants in DPIPWE who share deepening community opposition to the Liberals’ Expressions of Interest process. Tim Baker and Jason Jacobi know it too,” she said.
“Mr Baker’s plea for loyalty towards Mr Jacobi will fall flat with every DPIPWE staff member who joined the agency in order to help look after this island’s public wild lands.””
Loyalty, in my opinion, is something which needs to be earned through actions etc. If the actions of a manager don’t generate loyalty from colleagues, no amount of pleading will create it.
Perhaps it might be more productive to assess the actions of the one lacking loyalty?
