    I was baffled by this rainbow trout’s gut contents. Other than gum beetles (removed from pic) and noting some microscopic midges, the rest was a branching algal mess with tiny orange spots.

    Charophyte algae according to son Tom, with tiny orange spores. Try imitating those at your tying bench, and maybe a do-nothing retrieve?

    But it wasn’t that skinny, and looked quite healthy too!

    BTW the tiny spores were bright orange when fresh, so those hotspots make sense.
