A great day out at this year’s SCC Fly Casting Tournament held at the Southern Fly Fishers club & casting pool. Competitors tested their skill in blustery conditions over 3 events including:

    • Trout Accuracy – 9 ft., 5 wt rod accuracy casting at hoop targets floating in the pool 16 times for a potential perfect score of 80 points. The first 3 placing were:
      • John Waters 77 points
      • Bruce Ratcliffe 68 points
      • Corey Heath 63 points
    • Trout Distance – 9 ft., 5 wt rod distance event casting event. The first 3 placing were:
      • John Waters with a best distance of 38.87 meters
      • Bruce Ratcliffe with a best distance of 34.30 meters
      • Corey Heath with a best distance of 31.80 meters
    • Sea Trout Distance – 10 ft., rod casting a 27 gram shooting head. The first 3 placing were:
      • John Water with a best distance of 43.68 meters
      • Phil Smith with a best distance of 43.40 meters
      • Bruce Ratcliffe with a best distance of 43.33 meters

A high lite of the day was watching young Callum Phelan casting in one of his first events and having a red hot go at the Trout Accuracy hoops aided by some expert tuition from his mom Tracy who herself is a very accomplished tournament casters.

A fun day out casting with like minded sports people, honing their skills and enjoying a BBQ lunch along the way.

These events are open to everyone so if you are interested in a little more info please send me a response and I can answer any questions you may have.

    Cheers, Bruce

Thanks Bruce, it was a great day. Great to see some new casters in these events having a go and enjoying their participation. I too was very impressed with young Callum Phelan casting in his first event. At our most recent fly casting training day at the casting pool at Fairfield he was using his 5 weight line from Gavin Hurley, presented at the Australian Championships in July, to great effect at the hoops. Can see him continuing the family involvement in fly fishing and casting for many years to come. Thanks to Southern Fly Fishers, The Australian Casting Federation, all those who organised and participated.

Oh, those snags for lunch hit the spot.

Fishing gear, tournament techniques and hoops at random distances is a lot of fun.

Looking forward to the next one, but am chasing a dun hatch next week.

    John
