Out on the incoming tide on an Auckland estuary a few weeks ago. Using my  7 weight outfit . Had already hooked and released a 30cm kahawai and was working the edge of a sand bank in the heavy current on a king tide. Fishing a clouser style fly and was doing a fast strip retrieve in the top of the water column and got a bit hit. The fish took off on a run of about 75 meters then sulked in the current for a while. I assumed it was a kingfish, or at least a large kahawai – even when I first got a look at it down deep a few minutes later.

But once it thrashed on the surface it was neither and to my complete surprise it was a big snapper.

My previous best snapper was a 6 pounder from last season but this one was double that weight at 12 lbs (5.5 kg) and 68 cm length. Not what you expect when chasing kahawai in the shallows. Auckland has plenty of surprises to offer the land based fly fisher!
