It’s with sadness that I report the death of angler, guide and forum sponsor John Coles yesterday. John had been battling the effects of Motor Neurone Disease since he was diagnosed more than 3 years ago and I think it’s fair to say the last few months have been pretty tough. It’s not a disease you’d wish on anyone.

John was a fine fly fisherman, always first on the water and always last to leave. John was a former president of the Sydney Flyrodders Club and ran a successful guiding operation after he retired from the advertising industry. Many forumites would have been customers at his online shop.

Bob, Pete and I last saw John on Saturday night when we shared a pizza and some video fishing porn. As he watched those trout rising to take a dry fly you knew that was the one place he wished he could be. With any luck that’s where he’ll be now.

John is survived by his wife Robyn and his much loved kids Sophie and Tom.

Robyn plans to keep the online shop open for the immediate future and wants to assure anyone with outstanding orders that they will be filled to the best of her ability. But obviously this isn’t the first thing on her mind at this time. However, if you think your order might have fallen through the cracks then please contact Rob via John’s email address and she’ll be happy to help.

That’s a shock…although I knew he had been ill it was only a few days ago that he posted something in the Forum. I hope that his interest in fishing gave him some comfort in these last days.

I first met John through his typesetting business in Sydney, many years before he became involved in fly fishing. It seemed to me that he quickly became involved and stepped up to shoulder the load of fly fishing club duties as well as wider recreational fishing issues.

My best wishes and sympathies to his family and close friends.

What tragic news 🙁 a very sad loss to the forum and the flyfishing community. May he be enjoying a little dry fly action where ever he is 🙂

Ditto. John was one of the good ones. Always freely gave his time on this forum. A true gent and also devoid of ego.

    Rest In peace.

    Gary.

What sad news. John has supported the forum and the mag through content and advertising over many years.
He shared his illness through the short casts pages but I didn’t realise his time would be so short.
Be sure that we will support the family whatever their plans for the online and guiding business.

Never met John other than through the forum and this is a real shock. All the best to his family and friends during these trying times.
