TocsParticipantCould the recent mouse plague in NSW (Snowies) have a similar effect to the mast year in NZ?
I read that mice were responsible for Telstra fibre cable being cut in rugged bushland in the Snowy Mountains.

flylifeModeratorWhy not? Although you need to be a reasonably big trout to eat a mouse, and I guess the river needs to be big enough so the mice have to swim to get across. Eucumbene?
Maybe some big cod in cod country?May 21, 2021 at 12:37 pm #887917
JohnrsParticipantMaybe the carp will adapt and prosper even more!

chfParticipantI doubt it , but would love to see evidence of even a localised mouse event …we’ve had mouse plagues before without giant trout or cod resulting , I guess when it happens in Aus mice have much fewer reasons to climb branches overhanging water or to cross to the other side.
But it does seem this wet year has seen really good growth , average size of trout in Vic is certainly up and they’re all well conditioned too … got my fingers crossed for a good spawn as well
😊

thommo227ParticipantWatched 2 mice swim across the river at my carp spot last week. Also cod there. Nothing touched them.

JohnrsParticipantWhat a pity Thommo, I was hoping for a giant carp season!

chfParticipantSaw this article today on ABC news … photo confirmation of Cod feeding on mice in central NSW , and some interesting Environmental points worth considering .
Now just need some evidence of Trout feeding on mice in Aus too !

orangefly80ParticipantI strongly doubt that spawning browns are looking up at Mice swimming across the river…cod on the other hand!

JohnrsParticipantA friend in Forbes reports giant carnivorous carp charging around the Lachlan shallows, almost beaching themselves in pursuit of these tasty morsels!

flylifeModeratorThe latest NSW Freshwater Fisher newsletter has an interesting piece about concern that the mouse poison Bromadiolone if approved for use in agriculture could impact native fish and other wildlife. The story includes a pic of mice from the stomach of a Murray cod.
