Fishing

The Yarra River provides a good mixture of dry fly, nymph and streamer/wet fly fishing water. Early in the season the river is prone to high water levels and dirty water as a result of rainfall and its numerous tributaries, so if heading there be sure to look at water levers and recent rainfall. The river fishes its best from summer to the end of the season, it has reliable and cool flows through summer from the Upper Yarra Reservoir. When this river is at a moderate height and is running clear it always produces good fishing opportunities for the dry fly and nymph angler.

Note: the Yarra also has a nice population of Australian Grayling. They willingly take a fly, and if caught must be returned to the water as they are a protected species.

Access

Access to good fishing along the Yarra is made extremely easy by the walking and bike trails along the side of the river. Some of the best fishing is above and below the town of Warburton, so this is great place to start if you are heading to fish this river for the first time. If you enjoy poking around in some tighter water you will also find some more intermit water further upstream around Mcmahons Creek and beyond.
