Fishing

This river is one of the most productive fly fishing rivers in the state, the pace and depth of the water is well suited to dry fly fishing and also provides good nymph fishing early and late in the season. There is a great mix of rainbow and brown trout, so the fish are spread all through the different water types. The rainbows also help this river really fish well in the cooler months as well. Expect to encounter rising fish in the flatter water, and a good mix of insect life hatching throughout the season. The water can get quite low and warm over summer if there is not sufficient rainfall, this can make the fishing tough through the day, during these times fishing morning and evening are most productive.

Access

Victorian Fisheries have enabled excellent angler access upstream of the town of Bright. This section holds a large number of fish and is easy to access, the river is very well signed and there is parking by the river. You can also access water via bridges along the Great Alpine Road (B500). The river gets smaller and tighter the further upstream you venture, where you will find good fishing from Smoko and up to Harrietville.
