Fishing
Due to its size, depth and the pace of the water, the Coliban lends itself to dry fly fishing, and nymph below dry in higher flows or in the deeper holes and pockets. The fish in this little river are very willing to eat a fly and so long as the water is not too low, they are very aggressive and are happy to eat a big dry. I have had fish here eat a chernobyl ant and grasshopper in September! Lower down in the river in some of the slower pools you could also tweak wet flies or streamers and maybe run into a bigger fish.
Access
In the upper sections such as the area below Trentham Falls it is more like a small flowing creek, the further down you you go towards the reservoir, the slower and flatter the water becomes. The river can be quite overgrown so be prepared to skip little sections to find more open/ accessible water. There is good river access at the Springhill Rd bridge.
Note: there are plenty of blackberries and logs that you may need to navigate around, so if you can, don’t bring your brand new pair of goretex waders!
