Fishing

The Barham River supports a self-sustaining population of brown trout, with smaller numbers of rainbow trout and occasional estuarine species such as Australian salmon, black bream, and mullet closer to the mouth. The upper reaches fish best for resident stream browns, while the lower river and estuary hold larger migratory browns that move upstream following rainfall or cooler flows from late autumn through spring.
Most trout encountered are modest — ½ to 1½ lb — but in good years, sea-run fish of 3–5 lb are possible near the estuary limits. The river’s cool, shaded pools and riffles provide consistent fishing throughout the open season, with reliable insect life and year-round flow.
Fly anglers will find the upper Barham ideal for dry fly and nymph fishing. Classic small-stream patterns like the Royal Wulff, Elk Hair Caddis, Adams, and Pheasant Tail Nymph work consistently. In summer, terrestrial action from beetles, ants, and hoppers can be exceptional, especially in open glides and tailouts.
The lower river fishes differently — a mix of slow glides and brackish water near the estuary calls for streamers and smelt patterns, particularly in the cooler months when sea-run trout enter. Patterns such as Woolly Buggers, Matukas, and small baitfish imitations are effective when fished with slow retrieves or swung through deeper channels at dusk or dawn.
While not a high-numbers fishery, the Barham rewards a stealthy approach, accurate casting, and an appreciation for wild surroundings. It’s a quintessential Otway experience — lush, tranquil, and often underestimated.

Access

The Barham River is easily reached from Apollo Bay, which serves as both the river’s gateway and the best base for anglers. The Barham River Road follows much of the river’s length, providing good access to both the lower and middle sections. Several pull-offs and bridge crossings offer convenient entry points for wading and short walks.
Upstream, the Barham River West Branch provides small, intimate trout water flowing through dense fern gullies and tall forest. Access here is limited to walking tracks and a few 4WD tracks branching from Barham River Road West. Downstream, near the estuary and Barham River East Branch, the river becomes slower and wider, accessible via farmland tracks and picnic reserves.
A 4WD vehicle is not essential, but some unsealed roads beyond the main township can become muddy in wet weather. Wading is generally safe in the upper and middle reaches, though slippery rock and root systems are common under the dense canopy.
