Fishing
Great Lake offers a year-round fishery, with peak activity from November through March, when surface action dominates and trout feed confidently on midges, beetles, and other terrestrials. The lake is famed for its midge hatches, particularly early mornings and evenings, which create dense wind lanes and foam lines packed with rising fish. Calm dawns often yield intense feeding activity, while light winds are preferred to open up visual windows for dry fly presentations.
Bright days with a northerly breeze are ideal for boat-based ‘shark fishing’, spotting browns cruising the backs of waves feeding on beetles far offshore. Polaroiding from shore or boat is highly productive in summer, with trout clearly visible over weed beds, rocky bottoms, and silty bays.
While dry fly fishing is the crown jewel, wet fly and loch-style techniques also produce excellent results, especially in deeper water or during cold weather. Winter fishing, though brisk, is rewarding for those targeting smelt feeders and post-spawn fish holding close to structure.
Trout can be picky during calm periods, so stealth, fine leaders, and accurate casts are essential. On windy days, however, a well-placed foam beetle, cricket, or Carrot Fly can draw explosive surface takes.
Access
Shore fishing is extensive and highly productive, particularly when focusing on food-rich, windblown shores. Key areas include:
Tods Corner – A prime bay for both wet and dry fly tactics, accessible via boat ramp. Excellent midge and beetle water.
Canal Bay – Artificial lures only, but also provides good shore access and productive polaroiding in clear conditions.
Swan Bay – A consistent performer with shallow weed beds and wind lane action.
Elizabeth Bay & Little Lake Bay – Ideal for polaroiding and wind-blown shoreline fishing.
Brandum Bay & Sandbanks Bay – Good early-season water; productive during gum beetle falls.
Western Shore (Beehives to Haddens Bay) – Excellent for smelt feeders and shore-based loch-style techniques.
Boat fishing is central to unlocking the lake’s full potential. Early morning wind lane drifts, midday foam line searching, and open water polaroiding under summer sun all produce superb dry fly action. Use of a bow-mounted electric motor is strongly recommended to position accurately and silently.
Boat ramps are located at Swan Bay, Cramps Bay, Brandum Bay, and Tods Corner, with gravel alternatives at Haddens Bay and Boundary Bay. Be aware of sudden weather changes and submerged hazards when the lake is low.
