Fishing
Once renowned as a blue ribbon fishery, the Wollomombi has unfortunately suffered through multiple droughts and has seemingly dropped off the radar of local and visiting anglers. However, after three extremely wet years, the river is now on the mend and offers exceptional streamer fishing to those willing to put in the time and effort. Reports of fish over 5lb are not uncommon.
Given the trout's total fixation on crayfish, weighted streamers work remarkably well. While not everyone's cup of tea, if you're after the chance of a true trophy New England Tableland rainbow, prospecting with streamers on the Wollombomi is one of the best ways to go about it.
Working large black woolly buggers or crayfish imitations deep and slow along drop offs, weedbeds and around the tops and tails of pools is a tried and proven method on the Wollomombi.
Access
The Wollomombi River is long and has many tributaries, all of which are worth exploring. Most of the river and its tributaries run through private property, however a friendly visit to the nearest farmhouse will usually result in access being granted. A six pack or bottle of red also goes a long way in sustaining ongoing relationships.
There are public reserves adjacent to Waterfall Way, where it crosses over the Wollomombi both on the north and southern side of the road.
