Fishing
Regular stocking of browns and rainbows in this 163 ha lake, with depths of up to 43 metres provides plenty of rich habitat for trout to grow fast and Thompsons Creek Dam has subsequently developed a reputation for consistently large fish of trophy proportions.
Large wets/streamers such as weighted Woolly Buggers consistently pull bruts from the depths if you are prepared to put in the time, while nymphing is also a reliable prospecting method. While the trout are often large, they will also take small suspended midge patterns.
The winter months can be very productive, especially when winds are moderate as the lake does not offer a lot of protection.
Site fishing can be an exciting prospect at TCD seeing large trout work a shoreline beat. While in the warmer months, especially on bright days, searching with a sinking line can be helpful if fish are skulking off in the depths.
Access
The water storage is actually private property and access is restricted so check the relevant authorities' websites for details.
There is a single point of authorised entry from the Willow Vale Road Carpark with a short walk required to reach the dam. Fishing the dam wall is prohibited but from your point of entry the entire south-eastern shore is accessible and provides plenty of productive water with comfortable backcasting.
