Fishing

Fly fishing on Lake Jindabyne is heavily influenced by seasonal conditions and food availability. Throughout late spring and summer, large hatches of mayflies, caddisflies, damselflies, and midges create prime dry fly opportunities, particularly in the mornings and evenings. Trout feeding near the surface can be targeted with traditional dry fly patterns like Red Tags, Klinkhammers, and Possum Emergers. Terrestrial action peaks in mid-summer when grasshoppers, beetles, and ants get blown onto the water, drawing trout into the shallows.
For much of the season, nymphing is highly effective, especially in bays and along rocky shorelines where trout patrol the drop-offs. Weighted mayfly nymphs, caddis pupae, and Pheasant Tail Nymphs work well when fished under an indicator or slowly retrieved. In winter and early spring, trout become more aggressive as they prepare to spawn, and larger wet flies like Woolly Buggers, Magoo-style streamers, and Rabbit Fur patterns fished deep along the banks can produce spectacular results. Fishing around the river inlets, particularly the Thredbo River mouth, can be highly productive as fish move into these areas to spawn.

Access

Lake Jindabyne offers excellent public access with multiple entry points around the lake. Boat-based fly fishing is an option, but the lake also provides fantastic shore-based opportunities, particularly in the bays and around river inlets. Popular spots include Hatchery Bay, Creel Bay, and Waste Point, where anglers can find fish cruising the margins. The lake’s fluctuating water levels can reveal expansive weed beds and submerged structure, making it important to adjust tactics based on current conditions.
With its stunning alpine scenery, diverse trout populations, and varied fly fishing opportunities, Lake Jindabyne remains a must-visit destination for anglers seeking both technical and rewarding fishing experiences.
