Fishing

The trout fishing is fantastic right along the upstream length of the river, with large lake runners, often remaining further upstream providing a welcome reward. Early in the season, cold temperatures, snowmelt and high flows keep the action subdued through to November, but nymphing will still produce fish consistently.
In late spring, early summer, things start to fire up and the fish start to look up, providing plenty of opportunities to fish a dry dropper and entice fish on dries and nymphs. Concentrating on the lower half of the river ensures temperatures work in your favour.
From late December onward the dry fly fishing really comes into its own and the fishing becomes idyllic all the way from the mouth right up to the grass plains above. Eager trout can be enticed with a range of dries and as the hoppers proliferate, these become a staple goto during the day.
As autumn gives way to winter, the Eucumbene is well known (and perhaps notorious) for its sometimes controversial spawn run, where large numbers of fisherman of all persuasions gather on the river banks around Denison for their chance at the large browns that head up from the lake to spawn. Just be aware of the tight regulations around targeting trout at this time of year.

Access

There are quite a few access points along the river. In the headwaters, the Snowy Mountain Hwy provides straightforward access to the meadows with the bridge near Kiandra being the most obvious point of entry. From this point upstream will give you meadow creeks fishing and downstream will provide steeper gradient fishing with rocky structure to provide pools and runs.
Four Mile Trail is the next major drop-in point, giving access to the river just before it drops into the gorge.
You then drop below the gorge where access can be found at 'Flying Fox' named so because of the flying fox erected over the river. This is accessed via the Alpine Sawmill Trail. It's a bit of a walk in so pack lunch. You can fish up into the gorge where there is some great water, just be prepared to double back downstream, or you can drop downstream to slightly friendlier terrain and fish back up.
The Dension campground provides access to the big open plains that turn to lake bed depending on Lake Eucumbene levels and there is plenty of water to fish upstream into more typical water.
