Fishing
The Duckmaloi River offers exciting fly fishing for rainbow and brown trout, with fish typically ranging from 0.5 to 2 lb, though in good seasons trout exceeding 4–5 lb are possible. The pools and deeper bends often hold larger, more aggressive fish, which respond well to streamers fished along undercut banks and logs. In warmer months, dry fly fishing can be excellent, particularly when hoppers, beetles, and cicadas are active. Nymphing is effective in pocket water and faster runs, particularly when mayflies and caddis are hatching. However, the river’s flow is highly variable, and during dry years, water levels can drop significantly, forcing trout to seek refuge in deeper pools. In contrast, wetter years see strong recruitment and fast growth, supported by the river’s rich food supply.
Access
Public access to the Duckmaloi River is limited, with much of the river flowing through private farmland. Anglers should be mindful of landowner boundaries and use bridge crossings and wading below the high-water mark where permitted. Bindo Creek Public Reserve provides the best public access, with a mix of riffles, runs, and pools ideal for fly fishing. Further downstream, access improves near the Fish River confluence, but a 4WD is often necessary in wet conditions.
