Overview

Owen River Lodge is New Zealand’s finest 5 star rated fly fishing Lodge. That’s some statement, but when you ask one of our many repeat guests (we call them repeat offenders) why they keep coming back to Owen River Lodge, their answers tend to have a similar theme. It’s a mixture of having some of the most experienced fishing guides in New Zealand, the ideal location, sensational food, luxurious accommodations and the non pretentious, understated focus of service at its very best.

Fishing & Guiding

Over the years, New Zealand has developed a reputation for having the very best sighted river fishing for brown trout in the world. And Owen River Lodge, with its easy access to the Nelson, Marlborough, North Canterbury and West Coast fisheries at the top of the South Island, is perfectly positioned to put you at the centre of all the action. Or unique location means you can enjoy fly fishing on numerous blue-ribbon streams and rivers, with over 29 waters accessible by road (most within one hour’s drive) and countless others by helicopter.

The region offers huge variety, ranging from small, intimate rivers like the Owen River, to iconic freestone rivers such as the Wairau. Our average trout size ranges from 3lb to 6lb (there’s nothing average about that!) but each season our fishery grants many an angler’s dream of landing a 10 pounder.

Accommodation & Dining

We designed our six, purpose-built guest cottage suites at Owen River Lodge with both the angler and non-angler in mind. They are located in the garden, a short stroll from the main lodge building.

These luxuriously-appointed suites enjoy stunning views of the water, the valley and Kahurangi National Park, with the delightful sound of the Owen River in the background.

Their design emphasises light and space, accentuated by soaring, cathedral-type ceilings. They all feature fine art works and 100 year-old recycled Oregon beams and woodwork. Our accommodation suites can be configured with either a king-size double bed or twin single beds. We have a total capacity of 12 guests.

The food at Owen River Lodge could best be described as stunning. Naturally, all the meals are included in our nightly tariff.

We use the freshest of local produce, our large lodge garden, tended according to organic principles, supplies the kitchen with produce every day and is backed up by daily deliveries of fresh fruit and vegetables grown in the Nelson region. When it comes to seafood, nearby Nelson has a thriving fishing industry, so what they catch on Monday we serve at the lodge on Tuesday!

Activities

Owen River Lodge is a specialist fly fishing lodge, however there is an endless supply of “non-fishing” things to do around the immediate property, the local area and the Nelson / Marlborough region.

You can relax in the knowledge that we absolutely cater for non-fishing guests. The ambiance, décor and understated elegance of the accommodation and facilities, and the total focus of the team at Owen River Lodge, ensure that our non-fishing guests have a sensational time.

Whether its relaxing in the Jacuzzi/spa, riding one of our mountain bikes, having a massage, walking the lodge Golden Retriever/Labrador, white water rafting or wine grazing in the nearby wineries of Nelson or Marlborough.
