Patagonia River Salt II Wading Boot

Joshua Hutchins field tests Patagonia’s River Salt II wading boots across varied fishing terrain

Fishing across a lot of different environments — freshwater, saltwater, up north and down south — I need a boot that I can just get on with it. The River Salt II does exactly that.

It’s built for crossover. You can move from salt flats to rivers without changing gear, and there’s no sense of compromise. That matters. I don’t want different boots for different places. I want one pair I can trust wherever I end up.

Underfoot, the Vibram Megagrip soles are solid. Whether it’s slippery rocks, boat decks, or rough ground, they hold where they need to. I’ve walked oyster beds in Cape York, dealt with sharp coral and gnarly terrain, then gone straight back to freestone rivers down south — same boots, no issues.

They’re light, comfortable, and quick-drying, which makes a difference when you’re in and out of the water all day. The Cordura uppers are tough enough to handle abrasion, and the reinforced toe and heel add confidence when you’re pushing through rough country.

The higher collar and ankle strap do a good job of keeping sand and gravel out while adding stability. It’s a small detail, but over a full day it matters.

For me, it comes back to simplicity. Whether it’s an off-the-map creek or a remote flat, you don’t want to be thinking about your gear.
