Orvis refines the popular Hydros reel with improved drag, balance and durability
The updated Hydros fly reel from Orvis builds on one of the most popular reels in the lineup, refining a proven design with meaningful performance upgrades and improved usability.
At the centre of the update is a new end-to-end sealed drag system, delivering enhanced durability and protection from water, sand, and grit. This makes the Hydros even more dependable across a wide range of environments, from freshwater rivers to saltwater flats, while maintaining the smooth, consistent performance the series is known for.
The reel retains its large arbor design, allowing for faster line pickup and reduced line memory, while an improved, highly ergonomic drag knob makes on-the-fly adjustments simple and precise. Whether applying extra pressure during a fight or backing off to protect lighter tippets, the control feels intuitive and reliable.
Construction remains robust, with a Type II anodised aluminium frame and spool paired with a machined aluminium handle. The overall fit and finish have been elevated in this latest iteration, giving the reel a more refined, premium feel without losing its reputation as a hard-working, everyday performer.
The Hydros is available in a broad size range—II (3–5wt), III (5–7wt), and IV (7–9wt) in four colour options: Black, Coffee, Olive, and Flats Blue.
